Click to Enlarge! Hurricane Earl emerged off the African coast as an area of low pressure on 22 August 2010. It became Tropical Depression Seven and then Tropical Storm Earl on 25 August before intensifying into a hurricane on 29 August. Classified as a Cape Verde-type hurricane, it is the seventh depression, fifth storm, third hurricane and second major hurricane of the 2010 Tropical Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Click to Enlarge! Natural hazards already represent a significant risk to inhabitants and economies in the Caribbean. Annual expected losses from wind, storm surge and inland flooding amount to up to 6% of GDP in some countries. Climate change has the potential to greatly exacerbate these risks, and could increase expected loss by 1 - 3% of GDP by 2030.

Click to Enlarge! The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) has released the preliminary results of a study on the Economics of Climate Adaptation (ECA) in the Caribbean. In releasing the results, CCRIF Chairman Milo Pearson indicated that they will “enable countries in the region to develop fact-based adaptation strategies that can be incorporated into national development plans to increase resilience against climate hazards.
